Canoe Tokelau

Canoe Tokelau is an exploration and education project to rediscover, understand, use and share traditional Polynesian ocean navigation and boat building knowledge. It’s exciting, challenging and all about Tokelau.

By constructing and sailing a Tokelauan voyaging canoe from the atoll of Atafu south to Western Samoa, we aim to celebrate the traditional understanding of the Pacific environment and demonstrate the relevance of Faka Tokelau to a closer intimacy with the world we now live in.

Tokelau consists of 3 atolls in central Polynesia (what about Olohega?), an area of island chains spread across the vastness of the Pacific ocean. The three low lying coral atolls, Atafu, Fakaofo and Nukunonu are far enough apart to be over the horizon from each other, and 300 miles North of Western Samoa, remote in the central South Pacific.

it's not often i recommend an overly large book, but we had a request about somewhere to learn more about Polynesian canoes- i have to recommend "Canoes of Oceania", which you can fine second hand through abe books not cheap, but a lot of pages, and a fascinating read for us canoe nutheads.

Malo! Have you been to Olosega in the last 10 years???

If you have, we'd love to have some pictures and a description from you- and then head on over to our messageboard to check in with Taumafai.

Fakafetai!
